Quickie
Aircraft Corporation
"Free
Enterprise"
Designed to
be flown around the world non-stop, non-refueled

In
the early 1980s, Quickie Aircraft Corporation, in Mojave, CA, built
this airplane as an entrant in the race to fly around the world
non-stop, non-refueled--a goal finally achieved by Dick Rutan and
Jeanna Yeager in Burt Rutan's Voyager. Mike Huffman was brought
to Mojave by Quickie to help finish the design and construction.
His contributions included the unique landing gear dolly, which
was designed to be jettisoned after the airplane took off on its
record-attempting flight--at the completion of the flight, the airplane
was to be landed on a wooden skid on the bottom of the aircraft.
Unfortunately,
the airplane crashed during testing, taking the life of Tom Jewett,
one of the Quickie Aircraft owners
